Celebrated actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, who was long credited with being famous simply for being famous, is dead just shy of 100 years old.

After suffering a heart attack on December 18, Gabor was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead, reports TMZ.

Reportedly, the once-sparkling Hungarian-American socialite had been beset by severe health problems for the past several years and was hospitalised many times, most recently for a lung infection two days after her 99th birthday.

Partially paralyzed from a 2002 car accident, Gabor suffered a stroke in 2005. After breaking her hip in July 2010, she found herself in and out of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Later the same year she developed a leg infection believed to be a massive blood clot, one that became a gangrenous wound that, and despite best efforts, doctors were forced to amputate most of her right leg in 2011.

In her heyday, Gabor's many love affairs and marriages made her a household name, however something her movie work never did, though she did appear briefly in three bonafide 1950s Hollywood classics 'Moulin Rouge', MGM musical 'Lili' and crime drama 'Touch of Evil'.

Gabor also headlined in the unintentionally hilarious 1958 sci-fi camp classic 'Queen of Outer Space' where she delivered the movie's much-quoted line, "I hate that queen" while playing the role of a courtier Talleah.

Gabor would have marked her century in February.
