India wins seat to UN Human Rights Council

India on Friday was elected to the United Nations' top human rights body after getting 188 votes in the Asia-Pacific category.

India has been elected to the Human Rights Council at United Nations for a period of three years, beginning January 1, 2019.

The minimum number of votes required to get elected to the council was 97. In today's vote 18 new members were elected to the council by use of a secret ballot.

From the Asia-Pacific region, five countries were running for the five vacancies. The other four candidates were Bangladesh, Bahrain, Fiji and the Philippines.

The 193-member UN General Assembly held voting at United Nations headquarters for electing new members to the UN Human Rights Council.
