Mamnoon Hussain will be sworn in as Pakistan's 12th president on Monday, and few would know that he is Indian born and from a business background.

Hussain was born in Agra in 1940 and left with his family for Pakistan at the time of the partitioning of the Indian subcontinent to settle down in Karachi, the Express Tribune reports.

He studied at the Institute of Business Administration in Karachi and inherited his family's textile business, the report adds.

Hussain was elected as president on July 30 by members of the four provincial assemblies and the federal parliament.

Hussain has been a Nawaz Sharif loyalist and by selecting a president from the South, Sharif is trying to provide Karachi a stake in the federal government.

Hussain had earlier served as president of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry during Sharif's second term in office from 1997 to 1999.

Hussain was a key figure in Karachi after being appointed Governor of Sindh by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1999.

Hussain will have tough challenges at hand during his tenure as the president, including solving the power crisis, boosting the economy, countering Taliban insurgency and navigating alliance with the United States.
