The president of the women's wing of the Congress Party, Shobha Oza said Wednesday that it is extremely crucial to investigate the Jadavpur University molestation case, and added that the issue should be taken seriously.

"If any girl has faced harassment and is making allegations, it should be taken seriously. Even if the person is from any political party, the law should take its course. This act is condemnable and there is no one bigger than law, it is extremely important to investigate the matter," said Oza.

Last month, during a festival organised by the college, as many as ten male students had allegedly dragged a female student of the University into the boys' hostel and molested her.

The alleged victim informed the college authorities and filed a police complaint, following which the officials have begun the investigations. However, no arrests have been made so far.

Senior lawyer and women's rights activist Sudha Ramalingam also demanded strict action against the offenders saying "it is not enough to conduct a domestic inquiry".

Meanwhile, some other students of Jadavpur University, who were demanding a fresh probe in the alleged molestation case that took place on August 28, were also lathi charged by the police for protesting outside the university campus.

A bunch of students were playing music, when all of a sudden the lights went off at 2.30 a.m.

According to one of the students, people in civil clothes then targetted the girls and started molesting them following which the male students intervened but were dragged away by the molesters.

After the incident the students went to the Jadavpur police station and blocked the Jadavpur crossing but they were told by the police that if they didn't get up from there they would send the Rapid Action Force.
