Iraqi ground forces, backed by airstrikes seem to have halted the progress of Islamic State (IS) militants in western Baghdad.

According to the BBC, there were clashes with IS militants which was followed by airstrikes while fighters were trying to advance into the capital.

Meanwhile, airstrikes are being carried out by a global coalition of governments led by the United States in Iraq and Syria.

The Pentagon said that the U.S. aircraft also attacked other IS targets in Anbar province overnight.

The IS fighters had also fired more than 15 rockets at the town centre, killing at least one person.
