The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday launched an awareness campaign in collaboration with a local NGO against the use of Chinese threads in kite flying.

Students participated in large number in this campaign which was organised at Krishna Public High School in Jammu.

The event was held to create awareness for boycotting Chinese thread while flying Kite on Raksha Bandhan.

Ashwani Sharma, Station House Officer (SHO) of Bakshi Nagar, Jammu and Karandeep Singh of Child Care, a Non-profit organization (NGO) led the campaign in which a drawing competition was also organised to support the cause.

"Through this campaign, we informed students about the injuries which are caused due to Chinese thread and also how fatal it could be for children," said SHO Ashwani Sharma of Bakshi Nagar, Jammu after launching the campaign.

He also informed students that use of Chinese threads popularly known as 'gattu' in the market is banned and whoever uses and sell this, will be dealt according to law.

The police official also recommended everyone to use Kacha Dhaga instead of Chinese thread while flying the kite.

"It's just not about boycotting Chinese products in India, but it is also about people's safety. We should celebrate festival with love and affection and that's why we are banning these products," Karandeep Singh, Chairman of 'Child Care', a non governmental organisation told ANI.

Kite flying takes place in huge numbers on Raksha Bandhan and last year, many cases of fatal injuries were reported due to Chinese threads.
