Justice Handyala L Dattu has been sworn in as the 42nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) today after his predecessor Justice RM Lodha announced his retirement on Friday.

Justice Dattu's oath taking ceremony is being held in the Rashtrapati Bhawan and he will serve as the CJI for 14 months.

Earlier on Friday, former Chief Justice of India R M Lodha had said that no judge should accept any constitutional or government assignment after his or her retirement.

"It's my personal view that any judge should not accept any constitutional position, or any assignment associated with the government. It is my view that we need to amend a law that ensures that at least for two years after retirement, a judge is not given a constitutional post," said Justice Lodha.

He had earlier also expressed concern over corruption in the judiciary and emphasized that the independence of the judiciary is non-negotiable.

He also emphasized that corruption must be eradicated in all forms in judiciary.
