Flood victims in Jammu and Kashmir have urged the Centre to start rehabilitation work on a war footing.

Residents here hope that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government would help in bringing the flood-ravaged state back on track.

Choudhary Zulakar Ali, a legislator of the Rajouri region, appealed to the Centre to look into the matter seriously.

"Forty days have passed since the floods, but the government has not taken any measures to rehabilitate the victims. The government machinery has not been able to reach the people, who actually need help. I urge the Government of India to consider this as a national calamity and start rehabilitating the flood victims on a war footing," said Ali.

Abdul Rasheed, a flood victim, also urged the government to rehabilitate the displaced people in the region.

"The people here are very upset. They are still living in tents. I urge the administration to pay heed to our problems and do the needful," he said.

At least 175 people were killed by the devastating flash floods and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir.
