The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in collaboration with Central Board of Secondary Education organised a Valedictory Function of the Sanskrit Week celebrations here today.
The Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani was the Chief Guest at the function.
Eminent educationists from all over India graced the occasion. The Minister gave away the awards to all the successful students.
Total participation in the various events during the week was more than 84000. Total prizes given at school level were more than 29000. Total awards given away at National level were 119 for CBSE students and 25 for KVS students. Awards were also given to nine teachers and nine school principals.
The Government of India had declared Shravan Purnima as Sanskrit Day in 1969 and in the year 2001 it was decided to celebrate Sanskrit Week every year.
The Sanskrit Week comprises three days before and three days after Shravana Poornima. This year, the Shravana Poornima fell on August 10 and, therefore, the Sanskrit Week was celebrated in all CBSE affiliated schools in the country from August 7 to 13, 2014.
It was decided to celebrate Sanskrit week in all schools. The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan celebrated Sanskrit Week at three levels viz. Vidyalaya level, Regional level and at National level.
Varied cultural items were presented in the function by the students of Kendriya Vidyalaya - Group songs; skit, and a ballet.
In the backdrop of National level celebration various competitions like shloka recitation of Geet Govindam and Bhagawad Gita, declamation and story-telling from the Upanishada and the Panchatantra, essay writing competition, group song, quiz, skit were organized at Vidyalaya level by 1091 KVs across the country followed by cluster and regional level competitions.
Over eleven lakh students and around 56000 employees participated in these competitions organized to celebrate Sanskrit week in the country.
During the Sanskrit week celebrations all activities during daily morning assembly i.e. prayer, pledge, thought of the day and special items like song, skit and speeches were conducted in Sanskrit.
On the occasion of the valedictory function, the HRD Minister released the supplementary reading material on Ved Parijat developed by NCERT for class XI and XII and also the audio-video material consisting of value oriented short stories and learning of 'chhand' viz. 'Vatayaanam and Chhando Vilasah'.
