New Zealand remained on course of victory as they require 47 more runs with five wickets remaining at stumps on the third day of the second Test against Sri Lanka here at Seddon Park.

New Zealand bounced back after a shaky start as Kane Williamson smashed unbeaten 78 runs to help the hosts reach 142-5 in their chase of 189 runs.

Ross Taylor and skipper Brendon McCullum failed to convert their good start into huge runs as they got dismissed at the hands of Dushmantha Chameera for 35 and 18 respectively.

Chameera's other vital dismissals include openers Tom Latham (four) and Martin Guptill (one).

Meanwhile, Suranga Lakmal also chipped in with a wicket for the visitors.

New Zealand are currently leading the two-match series 1-0 after defeating Sri Lanka by 122 runs in the first Test in Dunedin.
