The Lahore High Court has directed the government's counsel to come up with the reply on behalf of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by December 19 to a petition against him for using the title of 'Sir' given by the British Queen.
The petitioner, barrister Javed Iqbal Jafree had contended that the British Queen had given the title of 'Sir' to Nawaz Sharif for being prime minister during the Golden Jubilee of Pakistan's founding in 1997, reports the Dawn.
He claimed that the same title was refused by the Indian prime minister when it was offered to him by the queen.
Pleading that Sharif could not use the title as he had not sought an approval from parliament before accepting it, Jafree said, no gazette notification was issued to the effect.
The petitioner asked the court to stop Sharif from using the title of "Sir."
Standing Counsel Nadeem Anjum during the hearing asked for time to submit a reply.
However, Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh directed the government's counsel to convince Sharif to file his response to the questions raised in the petition before any strict order is passed by the court.
The hearing was adjourned till December 19.
