After India clinched the five-match series against England 4-0, veteran batsman Gautam Gambhir has praised the Virat Kohli-led side for their ruthless and lethal performance, before insisting that they have shown they truly deserve to be the number one team in the world.
Karun Nair's blistering unbeaten knock of 303 runs and Ravindra Jadeja's figures of 7 for 48 in the second innings helped India win the final Test match by an innings and 75 runs in Chennai to finish the series on high.
"Prolific with the bat, lethal with the ball and ruthless in the field. Deservedly number 1 in the world, congratulations India! #INDvENG," Gambhir wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile, other former and current cricketers also took to their Twitter accounts to congratulate Team India.
Legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar congratulated India for their amazing performance on the field and ending the five-match Test series on high.
"Final result 4-0 to India. Wow!!! Amazing show guys. What a way to end the series :) #TeamIndia #INDvENG," he tweeted.
"Congratulations India on a great victory. This 4-0 is sweet .Great display by Jaddu," Virendra Sehwag tweeted.
Well done @imjadeja.. magic spell.. Wonderful win #TeamIndia for making it 4-0 @BCCI vs @ECB_cricket #INDvENG," veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh said.
Recalling India's 0-4 defeat in 2012 in England, batsman Yuvraj Singh said that it feels great to see his side's series win and Nair's brilliant performance.
Posting a picture of the entire Indian team lifting the trophy, skipper Kohli tweeted, "These are the moments u cherish all your life. So proud of these guys for putting in all they had. This is more than a team. This is a family."
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur, head coach Anil Kumble, opener Shikhar Dhawan and BCCI senior officials were among others to congratulate the Indian team on their remarkable feat.
Team India is on a roll and the hot streak it nurses now is the best it ever had. India have remained undefeated for 18 consecutive Tests and have won 14 of those games.Their earlier fine show was from 1985 to 1987 when in 17 Tests, they had four wins, 12 draws and a tie.
