A shutdown was called by the members of Madhesi-centric parties on Saturday demanding the release of their arrested cadres in Nepal's border town of Birgunj.
The shutdown was called after the police did not release three including the National Madhesi Socialist Party central member Rajesh Man Singh.
The trio were arrested while they tried to obstruct UCPN-Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal from entering Birgunj for a public function on Friday, reports the Himalayan Times.
The protesters, who raised slogans during their protest, took to the streets shouting slogans and burnt tyres to vent their ire over the arrests. The demonstrations were staged at major junctions of the city.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested 17 people so far to control the situation. However, 14 of them were released soon after.
The police is now interrogating the three suspects.
