An earthquake of the magnitude 6.2 on the Richter scale has struck off Chile's central region.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred about 34 miles (54 kilometers) southwest of Ovalle, Chile at 7:19 a.m. local time. The USGS said it was detected at a depth of 47 miles (76 kilometers).

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage by far.

Chile is highly vulnerable to earthquakes. Eight years ago, in 2010, a devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake is one of the strongest ever recorded.

The tsunami it created is said to have killed over 500 people, according to reports.
