Manager says Pistorius was London Olympics global icon, set for further success

Blade runner Oscar Pistorius' manager has claimed that his client had been designated the global icon of the 2012 London Olympics and was set for further success, before he was accused of allegedly murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Appearing from a court in Pretoria, South Africa, Peet van Zyl claimed that Pistorius could have increased his income by five or six times had he not been allegedly involved in the murder of girlfriend Steenkamp at his home in Pretoria, reports the BBC.

Throughout his trial, Pistorius has denied charges of murder, saying that he killed Steenkamp by mistake over fears that there was an intruder in the house.

Van Zyl also described Pistorius' relationship with Steenkamp as "loving and caring" and implied he was more serious about her than previous girlfriends.

The double-amputee competed in both the Paralympic and Olympic games in London.

Van Zyl said Pistorius was an "astute businessman" and there were a lot of opportunities for him because of his raised profile.

The trial is nearly over. The defence may call one or two more witnesses and the prosecution may ask the psychologist who assessed Pistorius over the past month to give evidence.

Pistorius, 27, could face life imprisonment if found guilty of murder, but if he is acquitted of that charge, the court will consider an alternative charge of culpable homicide, for which he could - if convicted and receive about 15 years in prison.
