Manipur hosts 'Krishi Mela' to highlight commendable work of farmers

The northeast is endowed with rich natural resources and has a favourable climate for the production of fruits, vegetables and other essential crops.

Recently, Manipur hosted a state level krishi mela to encourage and appreciate the efforts put in by the farmers and various departments.

A four-day long state level Krishi Mela was organised by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency in collaboration with the State Agriculture Department at the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in Imphal.

Addressing the event, State Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam stressed on the need for the introduction of modern agriculture techniques.

Around 37 stalls from concerned departments and progressive farmers showcased their products and achievements.

Technical sessions for farmers were also conducted as part of the fair.

" This kind of mela is very helpful for the farmers as we can showcase our products and we also get to know the products from other districts of our state so, it is very good," said Soram Lokendro Singh, a farmer.

" It's a good initiative .I really appreciate them for organizing such mela. Whatever they have displayed here from private sector or different activities is brilliant," added Dhanabir Singh, a visitor.

In the last five to six years, the Directorate of Agriculture along with the Horticulture Department, Fisheries Directorate, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Directorate have been trying to boost production in the state to meet the food demands.

In recognition of their hard effort, the Directorate of Agriculture has been awarded three times consecutively by the concerned Union Ministry.

The Government of India recently rewarded Rs two crores to Manipur for the good work done by the farmers and Agriculture Department.

"We have organized this Krishi Mela to showcase the activities we have undertaken in our respective fields so that the farmers can see it here and when they return to their places, they can adopt the new practices and new technologies which are being given here in the premises," said G Shamu Kabui, Director, Directorate of Agriculture.

The state government would also be sending 200 farmers to Maharashtra to participate in a Krishi Common Mela to be held in February.

Such events not only help in providing exposure to farmers regarding latest technologies but also give them a platform to showcase their produce.
