Empowering women and making them self-reliant is a top priority of the Government of Manipur.

Recently, a two-week-long training programme on entrepreneurship skill development was held by the Manipur Industries Development Council in Imphal.

These women are in the process of learning how to process and preserve fruits and vegetables as part of a two-week training programme on entrepreneurship skill development.

The programme was organised at the Netaji Memorial Club in Kongpal Thongkhong by the Manipur Industries Development Council in association with Khagokpam Foods.

It was conducted under the aegis of Director of Commerce and Industries, Government of Manipur.

Kh Bina Devi, the proprietor of Khagokpam Foods, said: "Such training will benefit those women who are not having any job. After learning, at least they can do something at home. So, we organised this training and it will help them."

Over 13 women from different areas of Imphal West and East participated in the programme.

They were taught various techniques of extracting juice from fruits and storing fruits and vegetables.

Manipur produces fruits and vegetables in abundance.

Food processing and preservation can be a viable option for women to earn a livelihood.

Langpoklakpam Rani Devi, a trainee, said: "After joining here, I have learnt many things. Now, I know how to make fruit juice, squash, ginger candy, and mango pickle."

Chingshubam Memoria Devi, a trainee, said: "I got to learn many things, and whatever I have learnt here, I want to use at home later. And, I want to learn more about food preservation."

The state government has been conducting several such training programmes under different central schemes to train women in skills that will enable them to become self-employed.

Many women from the state are now running their own businesses, which also help in creating employment opportunities for others.
