Mercedes Formula One boss Toto Wolff has added a new twist to the Belgian Grand Prix controversy as he rubbished Lewis Hamilton's claims that Nico Rosberg crashed with the Briton deliberately at Spa.

The German hit the back of Hamilton's car on the second lap while trying to take the lead wrecking both their chances of victory.

The Mercedes team boss said that a meeting between the team, Hamilton and Rosberg was very heated. But he described claims of a pre-meditated crash as nonsense, The BBC reported.

And despite dark hints that punishment could follow for the son of the former champion for running into the back of Hamilton, Wolff said that there would be no knee jerk reaction.

Earlier Wolff had described Rosberg's actions as totally unacceptable and breaking rule number one about not crashing with ones teammate.

Wolff said that Rosberg felt he needed to hold his line, and added that the German needed to make a point, and for Hamilton, it was clearly not him who needed to be aware of his teammate.

Wolff said that Rosberg didn't give in, adding that he thought it was for Hamilton to leave him space, and that Briton didn't leave him space. So, Wolff said that they agreed to disagree in a very heated discussion amongst themselves, but it wasn't deliberately crashing and that is nonsense.

Wolff also said that Mercedes had a collision that could have been avoided, a second-lap collision, adding that it was Rosberg who attacked and he shouldn't have done it.
