'Modern day' Tughlak has thrown nuclear trident at poor: Congress

Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi post the government's decision that currency notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 denominations will not be legal tender beginning November 9, Congress leader Manish Tewari on Tuesday said the 'modern day' Muhammad bin Tughluq has thrown a nuclear trident at poor people of India.

"LOL-MOHMAD Bin Tughlak scraps 500/1000 Rupees notesNext capital of India will be shifted from Delhi to Daultabad.Tughlak's spirit resurrects," Tewari said.

"65% of India's population lives of agriculture that is non taxed-cash dependent No universal banking coverage or credit card penetration," he tweeted.

"Modern day Tughlak has thrown a nuclear trident at poor people of India.1000 Rupees of today is what 100 Rupees was 20 yrs back.Insanity!" he said in a series of tweets.

1,000 and 500 rupee notes will cease to be legal tender from midnight tonight and those who are in possession of these notes can deposit the notes in their accounts in banks and post offices from November 10 to December 30 this year.

Prime Minister Modi said those who are unable to deposit the notes within the deadline for some reasons can change them till 31st of March next year by furnishing ID proof.

The Prime Minister in a special nationwide televised address this evening said the new currency notes of Rs. 500 and 2,000 denomination notes will be introduced. He said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to limit the notes with higher value.

Prime Minister Modi said the ATMs will not work for next 48 hours and thereafter amounts up to Rs. 2,000 can be withdrawn from ATMs. He said that during this period, old notes of 500 and 1000 denominations will be accepted in Government hospitals for the time being. He added that the banks would be closed tomorrow.

The Prime Minister said that his government has waged a war against corruption. He said corruption, fake currency and terrorism are festering wounds, holding back the economy.

Prime Minister Modi said that his government has unearthed Rs. 1.25 lakh crore black money.

The Prime Minister said his government is dedicated to the poor and will continue to do so.

He further said the country has emerged as a bright spot despite adverse situation.
