Muslim Brotherhood has vowed to continue its 'peaceful' resistance in defiance of the military's ouster of Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

In a statement, the Brotherhood also distanced itself from an assassination attempt on a senior army commander in the Sinai Peninsula.

According to the New York Daily News, the statement came a day after Egypt's military-backed government tightened its crackdown on the Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood is outraged by the overthrow of Morsi and is demanding his release from detention and reinstatement as president.

The Brotherhood said that they will continue their peaceful resistance to the bloody military coup against constitutional legitimacy.

According to the report, Morsi was Egypt's first freely elected president. He was ousted by the military on July 3, following a wave of protests by millions of Egyptians who took to the streets to call for his removal.

The Brotherhood's statement also denounced the assassination attempt against Major General Ahmed Wasfi in the Sinai town of Rafah, near the border with Gaza, the report added.
