Former French Open champion Li Na and former world number one Victoria Azarenka have defeated Polish qualifier Paula Kania 7-5, 6-2 and Croatia's Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-3 7-5 respectively in the women's Wimbledon first round on Monday.
Moreover, former World No. 1 Venus Williams won her first singles match at Wimbledon since 2011 with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Spain's Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor to advance to the second round.
American Coco Vandeweghe also reached the second round of Wimbledon after defeating Spain's Garbine Muguruza, who upset Serena Williams at the French Open, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
According to Sport24, the early victims of Wimbledon on Monday were Sloane Stephens, who lost 6-2, 7-6 (6) to 10th rank Maria Kirilenko of Russia, and Sam Stosur, who fell 6-3, 6-4 to former US Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer.
Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm, who was the oldest player to enter in the tournament this year, lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 to Russia's Ekaterina Makarova, the report added.
