Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday dismissed former union minister Arun Shourie's criticism of the NDA regime and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government was running the country in an 'effective' manner.

"We are in a democracy, he has his opinion, but the country's opinion is different. Everywhere the people are supporting Modi. People of India are intelligent, they know the challenges before the country," Naidu told reporters here.

"They know the challenges we had inherited from the previous government. They know how Narendra Modi's government is passing all these hurdles, they know how the economy is being revived. The country has the most effective leadership," he added.

Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government, Shourie had earlier said that its 'lack of direction is making people miss Dr Manmohan Singh'.

Shourie, who was speaking at a book launch event yesterday, also accused Prime Minister Modi of managing headlines instead of the economy and said that such an approach would not work in the long-run.

When asked how he would distinguish the present regime from the UPA, Shourie described the policies of the NDA government as 'Congress scaled plus a cow'.
