The melting of snow in Shimla proved to be a boon for Nathpa Jhakri hydro power station as it has achieved record production of electricity.

"This year due to the heavy snowfall in winters, large amount of snow got stored in the mountains and now it is melting and rivers and canals in this region are overflowing. Due to this, all the power production projects in this area produced more power in the month of May, than they produced in the last 10 years," said Hemant Shaili, an environmentalist and hydro power expert.

The plant, which is one of the largest hydropower facility in the country, has the capacity produces 36 million units of power per day but on May 21 it produced 39.08 million units of power.

Officials at the plant, expressed relief over the achievements.

The 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Project, built in Himachal Pradesh is generating more power to deal with the frequent power cuts, which plague north Indian states.

Every unit produced in the plant demands 63 cumecs of water. Around 283 cumecs of water is required for all the machines.

The 36 million units of electricity produced from the plant is distributed to nine northern part states.

In the last decade the project has produced 59, 034 million units. And this year, till date, 1009 million units power has been generated.
