Celebrating the 65th Republic Day, veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani on Sunday unfurled the Indian flag at his residence and said the country has proved everyone wrong who had apprehensions about the nation's survival.
"People from other countries, mainly European countries, used to worry whether this democracy would actually survive or not. But I am happy to say that we have proved these countries wrong. Today, we can say that our country's democratic nature is very alive and vivid," Advani told media after unfurling Indian flag at his 26, Tughlak Crescent residence here today.
On being asked about the parade at India Gate, Advani said, "The most striking thing of the parade was that heavy arms, which are usually placed at the last, were placed at the starting this time.
"If we have to worry, then it should be the national security. Though it is evident that for good governance, education and healthcare are the two most important aspects. But, security is no less than these two aspects and is equally important. Therefore, today's parade was very effective," he added.
The 65th Republic Day was celebrated across the country in the spirit of patriotism and brotherhood to showcase unity in diversity on Sunday.
President Pranab Mukherjee unfurled the tricolour, and took salute at Rajpath. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was the Chief Guest at the celebrations.
