Senior CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday said that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's birth anniversary should be seen as a personal function of the Congress Party, and it had every right to decide who it wanted to invite for it.
"Nehru's anniversary is the personal function organized by Congress. It is their choice whom to invite or not," said Yechury.
"Prime Minister will attend all government functions," he added.
Congress leader Rashid Alvi had earlier said that his party did not invite Prime Minister Modi as it only wanted to invite 'like-minded' people.
The conference on Nehru, which is to take place from November 17-18, will be attended by leaders of various political parties from India and abroad.
Congress leader Anand Sharma had earlier announced that the conference will discuss Nehru's view on democracy, inclusion, empowering India and representative global order.
The conference will be chaired by party chief Sonia Gandhi.
