Newbie Peter Handscomb delighted by victorious Adelaide Test debut

Australia new boy Peter Handscomb has expressed his pleasure to be a part of the day-night Test against South Africa, which the home side won by seven wickets at the Adelaide Oval.

When Handscomb and another debutant Matt Renshaw guided Australia to an emphatic victory, it was only the second time in history of Test cricket that two debutants were at the crease when the winning runs were struck.

"I was kind of hoping I didn't have to bat in that second innings, or at least that Matty Renshaw would hit the two runs that were needed and I could just sit on my bat. But it was nice to be out there, and with Matty as well in his first game, it was pretty cool," ESPNcricinfo quoted Handscomb as saying.

Besides the duo, debutant Nic Maddinson was also among the five changes that were made to the squad following Australia's humiliating second Test defeat by an innings and 80 runs in Hobart.

While both Handscomb and Renshaw got off to a great start, Maddinson is still waiting for his first scoring shot in a Test, having been dismissed by Kagiso Rabada for a 12-ball duck.

Backing Maddinson to bounce back in future, Handscomb said the former is a resilient player who exactly knows his game.

"He's fine, he's a resilient player who knows his own game and he's just a great bloke.If you get a good ball you're happy to go out to it - bowlers are allowed to bowl good balls. He's fine. He's still feeling good, and if he gets another opportunity I daresay he'll come out and whack them," he added.

Handscomb was speaking at the MCG, where he will have a Sheffield Shield game before he rejoins the Australian squad to prepare for the pink ball Test against Pakistan beginning on December 15 at the Gabba in Brisbane.

The Gabba Test would be followed by matches in Melbourne and Sydney from December 26 and January 3, respectively.
