The National Human Rights Commission on Thursday took suo motu cognizance of media reports on two incidents of rape in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and issued notices to Superintendents of Police, Sagar and Hathras, respectively calling for reports within two weeks.

In the incident of District Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, a 19 year old tribal girl was reportedly gang raped on the 30th June, 2014 and got so terrified that she ran in a naked condition and jumped off from a 70 feet tower in the fields and died on-the-spot.

As per the report, the police did not take any stern action and they, in fact, tried to hush-up the mater. The victim, a resident of Dindauri was going to Indore in search of job but she was sexually assaulted on the way.

In the other incident of Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, a 22 year old dalit girl immolated herself on the 14th July, 2014 after she was allegedly gang raped in Sikandararau. Reportedly, the victim had told her mother that she had been sexually assaulted by three men who lived in their neighbourhood. The victim's mother expressed her helplessness as her daughter died meters away from her house but she could not do anything to save her. What disturbed her the most was that her daughter's rapists were still at large.

The commission has observed that the contents of the press reports, if true, raise serious issue of violation of the rights of the victims.
