Expressing concern over the recent Mathura alleged gang rape incident, social activist Sudha Ramalingam said that there is no alternative for the police, but to register a complaint and investigate the people responsible for the offence.

"A girl immolated herself. Whether the parents want or not, it is a cognizable offence. There is no other choice or an alternative for the police but to register a complaint and to investigate the persons responsible for the offence. They should book the persons and secure punishment for them," she told ANI.

"Sexual offences are offences against which not many people are willing to talk out or complain. If this doesn't happen then it becomes impossible to take necessary action. We cannot talk about statistics but we must acknowledge that these offences are prevalent in the country and steps have to be taken so that such occurrences of such cases can be brought down," she added.

Ramalingam asserted that the 'Nirbhaya Fund' is not being used for women welfare.

Earlier on Tuesday, a 14-year old girl, who was allegedly gang raped by five men of her village, set herself ablaze in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura District.

The teen was allegedly gang raped on Sunday in Kosi Kalan. The family of the victim tried to hush up the matter, but the victim set herself on fire inside her home.

The girl, has sustained 70 per cent burn injuries and is battling for her life at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital.

The police has arrested the five accused, including a minor and filed a case of rape against them.
