Google has reportedly announced that its email service has a total of 900 million active users, up from 425 million in 2012, at the company's annual I/O developers' conference.

TechCrunch quoted Google's senior vice president of products Sundar Pichai, as saying that about 75 percent of its users now access their accounts on mobiles.

When Google last updated its numbers, it was the most popular email service in the United States, surpassing Hotmail (now Outlook.com), which had long held the top slot.
