A "pee-powered" toilet that generates electricity from urine is being launched by a university of England.

Scientists behind the high-tech loo hope that it can be used by aid agencies in disaster zones to supply much-needed 'urine- produced- electricity' to refugee camps, the Mirror reported.

The research team led by Professor Ioannis Ieropoulos, from University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol, said that they have already proved that this way of generating electricity works.

He continued that this exciting project with Oxfam could have a huge impact in refugee camps and the microbial fuel cells work by employing live microbes which feed on urine for their own growth and maintenance.

Students and staff are being asked to use the urinal to donate pee to fuel the microbial fuel cell stacks that generate electricity to power indoor lighting.

Ieropoulos added that this technology was about as green as it gets, as they did not need to utilize fossil fuels and they were effectively using a waste product that will be in plentiful supply.
