New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Friday that she was pregnant and expecting her first child in June.
The New Zealand Prime Minister took to Twitter to announce the news.
"We thought 2017 was a big year! This year we'll join the many parents who wear two hats. I'll be PM & a mum while Clarke (Gayford) will be 'the first man of fishing' & stay at home dad," she wrote on the micro-blogging site.
Ardern has asked her Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters to take over the reins as acting prime minister for at least six weeks after which she would resume her duties, the Independent reported.
"I fully intend to be contactable and available throughout the six-week period when needed. I will make arrangements for appropriate ministers to act in my other portfolios over six weeks since I would be away from the Parliament," she further said.
The New Zealand Prime Minister discovered that she was pregnant in October last year, days before her swearing-in, after her predecessor Bill English stepped down.
Ardern also holds the unique record of being the youngest female head of government in the world to hold office at the age of 37 years.
