One Army Jawan has been critically injured in an encounter with suspected terrorists here on Monday in the state's Kupwara district, even as the encounter between the Army and terrorists is still on.

The incident comes in the shadow of hostilities flaring up between Indian security forces and Pakistan along the International Border and Line of Control (LoC) of Jammu and Kashmir.

Nine Pakistani and eight Indian civilians have been killed since both sides' security forces started heavy shelling more than a week ago along a 200-km stretch of border in 2Kashmir.

Almost 20,000 Indian civilians have fled their homes in the lowlands around Jammu region to escape the fighting, taking refuge in schools and relief camps.
