'Outcast' Musharraf regaining political support in Pak

Former Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf is reportedly regaining political support with parties realizing the relevance of the army in politics lately.

PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Husain supported Musharraf's claim that he had consulted all relevant military and political stakeholders before imposing Emergency on November 3, 2007, the Nation reports.

Shujaat has demanded General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and ex-CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry should also be tried on the charge of violating the Constitution, the report added.

All political parties had distanced themselves from Musharraf when he stepped down in September 2008, the report added.

Another PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi raised the question that if Musharraf was a 'traitor', as being alleged, why PML-N ministers had taken oath from him before joining the PPP-led coalition after the 2008 elections.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain said that singling out Musharraf for treason trial is "unconstitutional."

Pakistan Awami Tehrik leader Dr Tahirul Qadri says the trial of Gen Musharraf is a personal "vendetta."

Senior PPP leader Khursheed Shah is also of the view that all those who had taken part in the October 12, 1999, coup or had validated military intervention should also be put on trial.
