Paes, Bopanna bag contrasting wins at US Open

Indian tennis ace Leander Paes and his Swiss partner Martina Hingis kicked off their US Open mixed doubles defence with a thumping victory in the opening round at Flushing Meadows here.

The Indo-Swiss duo secured a 6-3, 6-2 win over American pair of Sachia Vickery and Frances Tiafoe in a contest that lasted just 51 minutes at Court 11.

In men's doubles, India's Rohan Bopanna and Frederik Nielsen of Denmark overcame 16th seeded Czech-Serbian pair of Radek Stepanek and Nenad Zimonjic 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 to reach the second round.

Meanwhile, India's Sania Mirza and her Czech partner Barbora Strycova kicked off their US Open women's doubles campaign with a dominant win in the opening round.

The seventh-seeded Indo-Czech defeated unseeded American duo of Jada Myii Hart and Ena Shibahara 6-2, 6-3 in a contest that lasted one hour and nine minutes at Court 4.

Mirza had lifted the US Open women's doubles title with Martina Hingis last year, but the pair decided to go their separate ways last month due to the failure to achieve their desired results.
