Pak court upholds death sentence for Christian woman convicted of blasphemy

A Pakistani court has reportedly upheld the death sentence for a Christian woman who was convicted of blasphemy in 2010.

Asia Bibi was found guilty of making derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad during an argument with a Muslim woman. The charge has however, been denied by Bibi who says that the comments were made during a squabble with a group of women over a pot of water, reported the BBC.

The Lahore High Court has rejected her appeal challenging the death sentence imposed by a lower court.

Her lawyers have vowed to take the case to the Supreme Court.

The death penalty awarded to Bibi in 2010 had sparked outrage worldwide. Two prominent politicians, Punjab governor Salman Taseer and minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti were both killed for calling for reforms to blasphemy laws in the wake of her trial.
