Pak senators to file petition against Musharraf's 1999 coup

Pakistani lawmakers have decided to file a petition against former president General retired Pervez Musharraf for illegal dissolution of the Senate after the October 12, 1999 coup.

Several senators have planned to "stoke the embers" and have started consulting legal advisers over the issue.

The lawmakers will seek a compensation of their three-year blocked salaries and allowances as a Senate cannot be dissolved before its six-year tenure, the Daily Times reports.

The matter would be put before the Supreme Court after Eid-ul-Azha, the report added.

The senators elected in the 1997 elections included ANP's Ilyas Ahmad Bilour, Zahid Khan, Qazi Muhammad Anwar, Ajmal Khattak (late), Mukhtair Ahmad Khan, and Syed Aaqil Shah, PML-N's Anwar Kamal Marwat (late), Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Javed Iqbal Abbasi, Malik Abdur Rauf, Nisar Ahmad Khan, Anjam Khan and Sartaj Aziz, PPP's Syed Masood Kausar, Waqar Ahmad Khan, IJI's Bashir Ahmad Matta, and independents Abbas Sarfraaz, Syed Qasim Ali Shah and Syed Muhammad Javed.
