Pakistan has an opportunity to regain the fourth place in the ICC Test rankings if they win by one Test or better in the two-match Test series against South Africa in the UAE, thereby pushing Australia into fifth place and West Indies into sixth rank.

According to The Daily Times, in case of a 1-0 series win, Misbahul Haq's side will gain nine ratings points to end at 106.

Pakistan can gain up to 11 ratings points if they win both the Tests and jump to fourth place with 108, thereby gaining seven ratings points lead over Australia and nine ratings lead over West Indies, the report said.

South Africa head the rankings table with 135 ratings points and lead Pakistan by 38 ratings points, the report added.

The qualification pathway for the ICC World Test Championship in 2017 is through the ICC Test Team Rankings, with the qualifying period being from 1 May 2013 to 31 December 2016, the report further said.

The top four teams at the conclusion of the qualification period will qualify for the event in 2017, according to the report.
