Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's media advisor, Nagendar Sharma, on Sunday said the Parliament building does not meet the fire safety standards.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader shared his views on twitter minutes after flames were seen inside the Parliament premises.
"Let us not forget the Parliament building does not meet fire safety standards and it was declared unsafe by fire dept four years back," he wrote.
"All political parties represented in parliament had strongly opposed any structural change in the bldg to meet fire safety standards," he added.
A Right to Information query in November 2014 had reportedly revealed that the Parliament had not received a fire safety certificate for around 10 years, with the last inspection of the building taking place in 2013.
Earlier in the day, a fire broke out at AC plant room near the visitor's gate of the Parliament.
Smoke was seen coming out of the building, as policemen urged people to evacuate the periphery.
Several fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the flames.
No casualties have been reported so far.
The situation is said to be under control.
