Former Member of Parliament from Kerala, P.C Chacko urged Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday to take urgent steps to rescue Indian nurses held-up in Iraq.

"55 nurses, in one single place, are crying for rescue and government of India should seek assistance of the rulers there, and should arrange to evacuate them (Indian nurses). We request the Prime Minister to urgently intervene." said Chacko.

He told ANI, "Most of the nurses are from Kerala, and I know the agony through which their families are going. They are now almost held up and they don't find any help coming in. People are mercilessly being killed. Killing and counter-killing is going on. They are virtually under terror"

Chacko also said that every other country is trying to do their best to take their citizens out of the war-torn areas but we don't see what the government of India is doing in this situation.

The Kerala Nurses Association has also appealed to the state and central governments to arrange for the emergency evacuation of nurses based in Tikrit and Mosul. Both cities have been captured by a Sunni Jihadist group called the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) amid strikes on Sunday.
