Syria's armed forces said a military jet was downed by insurgents in northern Hama province on Tuesday, in which the pilot was killed.

Militant group Tahrir al Sham - a fighting force dominated by members of Al Qaeda's former branch in Syria - said it hit the plane, the local media reported.

The western central province has seen aerial strikes by the Russian and Syrian air forces.

According to reports, dozens of civilians have been killed in the bombing of towns away from front lines in the last few weeks.

More details awaited.
