Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who attended the celebrations to mark 75th anniversary of local Marathi daily 'Pudhari' here on Saturday, said that debate and dialogue are the two most essential aspects in a democracy.

"The newspapers, especially regional ones, have showed great courage. I congratulate the entire Pudhari family; 'Pudhari' newspaper has taken birth during the Indian freedom struggle," the Prime Minister said.

"Today, every decision, every thought must be discussed. Debate is very important in a democracy and so is discussion. If there is no discussion in a democracy, it leads to problems. Every decision, every thought must be discussed. But, these days there is no discussion. It is sad that there are allegations which turn into arguments and blame games," he said.

Furthermore, he lauded the media for taking up the responsibility of informing people.

"The growth of the media continued with the freedom struggle. There was a time when a lot of restrictions were put on newspapers, which went against democratic ideals but today the scenario has changed. There is a lot of responsibility on the media and I really applaud the kind of work they do," said Prime Minister Modi.

The Prime Minister is in Kohlapur to mark the celebrations to mark 75th anniversary of local Marathi daily 'Pudhari.'

The programme was organised at Police Parade ground. Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union railway minster Suresh Prabhu were present on the occasion.
