Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday raised the issue of fishermen and Tamils in his meeting with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
"In his meeting with the Sri Lankan president, the Prime Minister noted that India valued its relations with the country. He requested the Sri Lankan Government to expedite the process of national reconciliation in a manner that meets the aspirations of the Tamil community for a life of equality, justice, peace and dignity in a united Sri Lanka," said Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh at a press conference held here.
"Early and full implementation of the 13th Amendment and going beyond would contribute to this process," she quoted Modi as telling President Rajapaksa.
She informed that both leaders also discussed the fishermen issue, India's development assistance programme to Sri Lanka, and ways to take bilateral economic and commercial cooperation forward.
"Both leaders reiterated their desire to strengthen bilateral relations further," she said.
The meeting between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Modi took place at Hyderabad House here.
