Prime Minister Narendra Modi today stressed on the need to stop female foeticide in the country and asked people not to underestimate the importance of daughters in a family.
"We have a skewed sex ratio in the country, and this is not done by God, but our doctors. I plead to them not to kill daughters in wombs. People need to stop sacrificing the lives of their daughters in the greed to have a son," said Modi.
"People think that only sons take care of aged parents and are able to support them but I have seen families consisting of five sons who do not look after parents, whereas just one daughter does that selflessly," he added.
He also applauded the women sportspersons of the country who won medals at the recent Common Wealth Games.
"Come let us applaud the women sportspersons who brought us laurels in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games. 29 girls have made us proud at the recent Common Wealth Games, let us applaud them," said Modi.
Earlier today, the Prime Minister unfurled the flag in the central court of Red Fort, after inspecting the guard of honour.
After hoisting the National Flag from the ramparts of Red Fort, he began his addressal to the nation.
The Prime Minister also paid homage at the Rajghat before reaching the Red fort.
