Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday paid homage to former president Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed at his mausoleum located in the heart of the capital on the occasion of his 109th birth anniversary.
The prime minister also laid a traditional chadar on the mausoleum.
Born in May 13, 1905 in the Hauz Qazi area of Old Delhi, Ahmed was an ardent nationalist, a freedom fighter and an able administrator who played an important role during the freedom struggle against British colonial rule.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Barpeta constituency in Assam in 1967 and again in 1971.
He served Union MInister for Food and Agriculture, Cooperation, Education, Industrial Development and Company Laws. He was India's fifth president from 1974 to 1977. He passed away while in office.
