Tamil Nadu Police have rescued a British couple of Sri Lankan origin from their abductors near the town of Mandharakuppam.
According to a senior police officer, nine people kidnapped Thavaraja and Salaja on May 29 from Chennai while they were on a nine-day temple tour of Tamil Nadu.
They had arrived from Sri Lankan capital Colombo.
Chennai Police Commissioner, S. George, said: "We got information from London Police that the couple was indeed kidnapped by someone here in Chennai for a ransom payment of 300,000 pounds to be paid at London."
After arresting some of the suspects, the whereabouts of the couple was revealed.
Police have arrested eight of the nine persons involved in the kidnapping. One person is on the run.
Chennai Police coordinated with the couple's daughter Dharshini during the rescue operation.
