The Premier League and Football Association have come up with a new rule prohibiting players, who lose consciousness in English top-flight matches next season, from returning to the field of play.
According to The Guardian, players who have not lost consciousness will still have to undergo an on-field or touchline assessment before being allowed to continue.
The FA along with the Premier League have launched a campaign aimed at ensuring the safe return of a player in the game following a head injury.
A set of guidelines has been issued by the duo for the same.
Dr Ian Beasley, the FA's chief medical officer says managers, players and clubs need to understand the risks associated with head injuries, adding the advice of medical professionals is key in this area, and whilst they have developed processes to deal with many types of injury this is an area that has perhaps needed some more scrutiny.
He said that the FA has worked closely with the stakeholders to develop these new guidelines and the message is clear for players; listen to medical advice and take no chances.
He further said that the FA was committed to working with Fifa to understand the universal impact of head injury in football and ensure it is high on Fifa's agenda.
