President Pranab Mukherjee will pay a two-day visit to Bhutan beginning November 7 at the invitation of the King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. This is going to be the first bilateral visit by a President of India to Bhutan in 26 years.
During the visit, President Mukherjee will have meetings with the King Wangchuck and Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, along with several other senior leaders.
The President will be accompanied by a high level delegation including, Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha, four Members of Parliament(MPs), senior officials and senior representatives from educational and academic institutions.
President Mukherjee's visit is expected to further expand the bilateral partnership and strengthen the close bonds that exist between the India and Bhutan.
India and Bhutan's bilateral relations date back to 1949 when the two countries signed the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. This treaty, which provides for perpetual peace and friendship, free trade and commerce, and equal justice to each other's citizens, was updated and signed by King Wangchuck in February 2007.
