The 41st Chief Justice of India, R.M. Lodha, retired on Friday, and said no judge should accept any constitutional or government assignment after his or her retirement.

"It's my personal view that any judge should not accept any constitutional position, or any assignment associated with the government. It is my view that we need to amend a law that ensures that at least for two years after retirement, a judge is not given a constitutional post," said Justice Lodha.

"It is one of the rare courts where petitioners appear in person; the Supreme Court of India is absolutely unique. It has been a great experience, and a big challenge, but a lot more needs to be done," he added.

According to reports, Justice H L Dattu will be the next Chief Justice of India.

Last week, Chief Justice Lodha had expressed concern over corruption in the judiciary and emphasized that the independence of the judiciary is non-negotiable.

He also emphasized that corruption must be eradicated in all forms in judiciary.

Asserting that the judiciary has inherent strength, Lodha said no effort will succeed in taking away its independence.
