In an endeavour to woo voters of poll bound Assam, Congress Party vice President Rahul Gandhi on Monday promised to change the face of the state if the party is voted back to power.
Addressing a rally in Goalpara district, Gandhi said the grand old party will fight for the rights of people of the state which have been siphoned off by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre.
"Modi withdrew the special status the Congress Party gave to Assam. Modi ji is anti-poor; Moreover, in whichever state they are forming a government, they are brewing violence," claimed Gandhi.
"I have proposed an idea to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi that people earning less than 2.5 Lakh should get free medical facilities in the state," he added.
Gandhi further asserted that if given a chance again to govern the state the Congress will work towards the betterment of farmers.
"We will be coming up with a scheme through which we will provide financial aid to farmers in need. We will also provide cold storage in every block," said Gandhi.
The first of the two-phase Assam assembly polls began today in 65 constituencies.
More than 95 lakh voters will decide the fate of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and BJP Chief Ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal.
The Congress Party has fielded a total of 65 candidates; the BJP has put up 52, and AIUDF 27. The second phase of the polling will take place on April 11.
