Railway Board chief confirms one killed, nine injured in twin blasts on train at Chennai Railway station(Update:Train blast)

One person, a woman passenger, was killed, and nine others were injured in two blasts that took place between two coaches of the Bangalore-Guwahati Express train on Thursday.

Confirming the news, Railway Board Chairman Arunendra Kumar

told ANI that the train was stationed off platform number nine at the station at the time of the blasts.

He confirmed that of the nine injured, two were seriously hurt by the blast that took place at 7. 15 a.m., ten minutes after the train's arrival at the station.

The dead passenger, identified as Swati, was aged 22. A railway official said that she was travelling from Bangalore to Guntur via Vijayawada. The train was travelling from Bangalore to Guwahati. Both coaches of the train are in a damaged state following the blasts.

The nature of the blast is not known as yet. A National Investigation Agency team is going to Chennai to join the investigations.

According to R.K. Mishra, a senior railway officer, there were two minor intensity blasts that took place between the S4 and S5 coaches of the train.

He said that Swati was killed on the spot and railway officials said her relatives have been called to Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu Government has announced compensation of one lakh for the family of the woman who died, Rs. 55,000 for those who are critically injured and Rs. 5,000 for the other seven injured.

Television reports said police teams have arrived at the spot to conduct an investigation as to what caused the blast on the train that was about to leave the station.

The railway station platform, according to the television reports, has been cordoned off. Train services have also been suspended for the time being. Further details are awaited.
